Loving Kindness

Describe your experience. Did you find it beneficial? Difficult? Why or why not? Would you recommend this to others? Why or why not?

I had to practice this exercise two times as I couldn't find that inner peace the first time.  It was too many distractions in my home.  After the second time I was able to fully embrace the loving kindness.  I did find it beneficial and would recommend it to others.  The act of taking on the suffering of my love one on my in breath and on my out breath giving them healing and peace was amazing.  This is an exercise that anyone could easily incorporate it into their daily lives.

What is the concept of "mental workout"? What does the research indicate are the proven benefits of a mental workout? How can you implement mental workouts to foster your psychological health?

The concept of “mental workout” is exercising your mind daily.  Without this daily exercise you won’t be able to fully evolve your psychospiritual life.  Research has suggested that consistent daily mental workouts have proven results.  A healthy mind is just as important if not more important than a healthy body.  This week while driving to work I have focused on the beautiful things that I pass. Like the changing colors of the leaves on the trees, the beautiful blue sky and puffy white clouds.  This honestly eased my frustration of sitting in miles of traffic.

I hope you all have had a very positive week on purpose!

  1. Katrina,

Nice post and glad that you took a couple of runs at feeling loving kindness. I also found it an amazing exercise that I hope to utilize on a more consistent bases. Noting the beauty in the change around you in Fall rather than the mean guy in front of your car that cut you off is a much better use of time and I’m guessing take the stress of rush hour away. Smart play on your part to turn a daily chore into a nice experience.

  2. Katrina,

I had the same issues with this week's exercise. i found the voices very irritating and i startled each time the woman started to talk. As I was focusing on the sound of the ocean waves, I felt disrupted but I took notes and did the exercise again. This time, I used my own ocean waves soundtrack and i was able to focus on the task. Contemplating on people I love and care about is easy. Contemplating on the "enemy" is a bit harder but I can say that I was hurt and i was able to forgive. Forgiveness is for my own sake and not for the wrong-doer.
You mentioned that focusing on the fall-changes eased your traffic jam experience. I remember the Chicago rush hour where I was stuck in traffic for hours at the time and I tried to find something pretty or interesting to focus on rather then getting mad on all those who cut in front of me just to earn a once car spot ahead. Loving kindness can be for sure applied during traffic jams.

  3. Hello Katrina,

I too was overwhelmed by trying the exercise the second time around. It was painful at first in placing my feet within my grandpa's shoe who had passed away without saying good-bye to me. It brought pain to me as I could sympathize with what he was going through, and comfort with the relief in knowing that all his suffering is over. I would definitely recommend this exercise to anyone who wants to experience the loving-kindness within their inner self.
    Great post Katrina.

  4. Hello Katrina,
I did have a positive week this on purpose. I found that the majority of people are so use to negativity thoughts that when someone makes positive statements all the time they get real uncomfortable and look at you sideways (which I found so funny ). But the real sad part about it is that most people just choose to lay in their negative situation if you offer a positive word to their situation they quickly see yeah and give you back a negative response. Did you run into this at all with your positive week? Not all gave negative response some perked up and said your right it is a new day.

  5. Hi Katrina,

I also had to do this exercise a few times in order to full grasp the inner feeling. Focusing on the positive aspects of our lives is so important in keeping the mind happy and healthy. I tend to do a lot of driving or hiking to help keep me happy and positive. There's just something about nature and its beauty that is truly inspiring.
